School Construction

Until the start of our school project in early 2011, the village of Mushapo did not have their own school. To spare the children their daily long walk to neighboring villages and in order that more children can get a good education, ADH made the realization of a school project in Mushapo its goal. The school project is meant to last: Several school buildings with bright spacious classrooms of solid, durable materials should guarantee a permanent school operation no matter what the weather conditions. In addition, important new jobs will be created in the rural area by building schools and the operation thereof.

Preparations for the construction of the schools are almost complete

By now we have almost all building materials so that we can soon begin with building. Bricks for the walls and the doors and windows are made in Mushapo itself. Other materials such as iron rods for the foundation and the pillars, support beams and wooden slats for the framework, nails and corrugated iron for the roof were purchased in Tshikapa and transported to Mushapo. They are safely stored on the farm. We're just waiting for the right time to buy the cement because it is too expensive at the moment.

Other materials are prepared

The preparations for the construction of the school building are in full swing. The materials are purchased and brought to Mushapo or manufactured. The SADR farm supports us with the purchase of construction materials, so that we can get them for good prices. Furthermore, SADR supports us with logistics like helping us with transporting the materials from Tshikapa to Mushapo. We also found some new supporters in the Congo, which will later help us with transporting the necessary furnishings for the School from Kinshasa to Mushapo.

The location of the school buildings is determined

The exact location is now fixed for good. We decide to build a school in a central location. In order to shorten the distance for the children of the neighboring villages Kakondo and Kamupafu, the school building will be build 200 meters southeast of Mushapo. In this part of our nine hectares of land we prepare the ground for the construction of the school by clearing the trees, shrubs and elephant grass.

7000 bricks are produced

Our work begins with the production of bricks. 7000 bricks are produced for the first school building. For this, good clay soil is dug up on site. In a hand press the clay is pressed into bricks which are then left to dry in the air. Then the stones are stacked, covered with clay and baked.

Subsidized construction by the German Embassy in Congo

In the Congo, humanitarian assistance is focused primarily on the well-developed areas - the cities. The rural areas are rarely considered here. For this reason, the German Embassy in Kinshasa agrees to our request for a subsidized construction. The justification for their support: "We have the impression that your project is well thought out. Moreover, it is in an area that otherwise gets very little help. That’s why we agree" We therefore express our special thanks to the German Embassy in Kinshasa. The construction cost subsidy is sufficient to get the materials for a nice big school building with two classrooms and two small offices. The first preparations for the start of the school building must now be made.

Funding of the school building

We have to take care of the funding of the school building. We visit some of our supporters in order to be able to start building as soon as possible. We apply for a building cost subsidy at the German Embassy in Kinshasa. The embassy receives over 400 such applications a year can only accept a few. Let´s see if it works.

ADH owns a piece of land

Our project begins with planning. We look for a suitable place for the school buildings with an integrated farm project. The produce of the agriculture will help the long-term financing of the school project. The chiefs (traditional owners of the land) donate a 9 ha area and it is registered by the government. Before the construction work of the buildings can start the wild countryside has to be surveyed and cleared.

The beginning

We arrive for the first time in Mushapo, West Kasai. Mushapo is a small village, 50 km south of Tshikapa direction Angola and ca 1000 km southeast of Kinshasa. The village has no school and up to now the children have to make long walks to the schools in neighboring towns. We visit the schools there to evaluate our next moves. The project is taken on – ADH will build a school in Mushapo, so the children there.
