Opening of Agro-Veterinary School in Mabala

Our two new schoolbuildings, with three big classrooms each, and the office building for the director and teachers are finished enough, that the school could still start in this year. This is an amazing accomplishment of the last 5 months, especially under the difficult circumstances in the remote interior of the country, and we are very thankful for everybody’s wholehearted participation! The school is called ITAV-ADH Mabala; ITAV stands for Institute Technique Agro-Veterinaire. (Picture: Some of the 260 pupils in our school, incl.15 Pygmy children)

Construction Phase in Mabala - Looking Back, Everything Went Very Fast

The construction work had only started shortly after Wolfgang’s Congo visit in April. It made speedy progress, due to the generous support of the German Embassy, which sponsored more than half of the construction costs.

Construction Phase in Mabala - The Team

ADH manager Jean in Kinshasa visited the construction site every two months and spent one week each time to help with the project. He reported that the team of workers worked harmoniously together, overseen by our local manager in Mabala, Mme. Annie. Gilbert in Kinshasa helped with the communication between all parties involved and he worked on the registration of the school. (Picture: Mme. Annie (right) with the team of construction workers)

Construction Phase in Mabala - Rapid Progress Thanks to Generous Support

It made speedy progress, due to the generous support of the German Embassy, which sponsored more than half of the construction costs. The other half came through the faithful gifts of our donors in Germany and the Czech Republic. Some support came even from Congo: the company FAMECO in Kinshasa donated all the iron bars, which were shipped to Nioki by boat. The wood company SODEFOR in Nioki helped with 60 % discount for the 120 school benches and tables.

The Construction of the School Building in Mabala Has Started

After all preparations have been completed, the foundation stone was laid for the school construction in Mabala. The chief of the county "blesses" our land on which the school building is currently being built. (ADH Cornerstone)

Bricks for Agro-Veterinary School in Mabala

For the construction of the school building, 30.000 bricks were fabricated on site. Then the bricks were tested if they can be burned by mounting a kiln of 2000 bricks and making fire inside for 24 hours. A week later, the oven was opened, and we learned that the clay consists of too much sand, as half of the bricks were broken during the burning process. Nevertheless, they can still be used for the construction. We will use cement coverings to protect the unburned bricks against the strong rains. The foundation of the building will consist of cement mixed with rocks, as the soil is clay mixed with sandy ground. Every three meters, a column, containing strong bars of iron, will be set up to support the top belt on which the roof will be placed. This way of construction should ensure the strength of the building.

Creation of bricks for school construction in Mabala

In our new project in Mabala 30.200 bricks were fabricated, which is the amount we need for the school building. A well had to be dug to get water for the fabrication of the bricks for the school building. A simple shed - made from sticks and leaves - is built for the fabrication and storage of the bricks. Next, the bricks will be burned to make them strong. Mme. Annie oversees the work.

New school project in Mabala

In the beginning of March, Wolfgang and Jean flew to Nioki to start our new project there. They again stayed at a guesthouse of the company SODEFOR who agreed to give us free accommodations including a cook whenever we visit Nioki. We met up with Joachim, the project manager of the NGO BBK, who we are working together with on this project, and with the local representatives Annie and Leonard. Annie is the head of the BBK in Nioki and school directress in Mabala. Leonard has 10 cows, something we had not yet seen in other parts of Congo. We wish more people would breed animals to improve the supplies for the local population. We discussed with them how we could help the area the most and decided to build a secondary school with emphasis on agricultural and veterinarian training. This will benefit the whole Kutu region as they don’t have any school of this kind. For the location of the project we chose a 40 hectare piece of land between the city Nioki and the village Mabala. This will enable pupils from both places to visit the school easier and the territory is big enough to teach agriculture on site. If we receive enough funding, we’d like to build a small boarding home there in the future, so young people from surrounding villages can also come and learn how to do agriculture and then go back to their villages and teach there what they have learned.
